Continuing Education

I am in a field that is ever changing and promotes continuing education. After spending a long day in a class about a topic in which I consider myself very knowledgeable I am amazed and how much I learned.

Sure I learned some knew things about the understanding of the pathophsyiology of Asthma.... a fascinating subject to me, one that has little to do with my practice.

A few facts about the drugs and the devices used to deliver them...and every changing array of things difficult for the most diligent practitioner to keep up on.

But what I learned .... was framing.....a concept I am sure I had heard before....but never really embraced.

When you buy, or acquire, a photo or piece of art or memorabilia that is of value to you..... we often spend a great deal of effort acquiring the perfect frame...to fit perfectly in the room in which you are going to display it... weather gilded or weather worn...you make it "fit in".

We do that with people as well.....why is a dysfunctional family who has a few...maybe a few too many...framed as a danger, or 'a potentially bad situation'..... while an affluent seemingly well adjusted and realistic family who goes to dinner and has a couple bottles of red wine framed as "coping appropriately and just getting away". Both are using the skills they have to deal with what is handed them.

Maybe next time I will try putting on my "ross colored" glasses and framing people differently. Maybe that will help me not be afraid, maybe that will help me be the person I want to become.

....

ah continuing education.... may I never stop learning about myself!
